Malta’s strategic position some 90km south of Italy and 230km north of Tripoli has for long been an attraction to shipping operators. The island also enjoys excellent natural harbours and one of the best transhipment hubs in the Mediterranean Sea, which combined with Malta’s excellent infrastructure, hosts a comprehensive range of services to the maritime industry.
Besides the glamorous splendour it offers to the great amount of cruise liners visiting Malta, the Grand Harbour in Valletta offers hospitality to numerous shipping operators for their specific needs and includes a grain terminal, roro berths and other wharfs to cater for cargo operations.
The Freeport Terminal situated at Marsaxlokk Harbour started operations in 1988 and has now established itself as a major maritime hub in the Mediterranean Sea. This port enjoys enormous facilities including two terminals comprising a roro berth, 23 gantry cranes, a distripark and an oil terminal. It ranks amongst the top Mediterranean transshipment ports.
